BOOK
Beauty Extra Booklet for JOY Indonesia

Overview
The Beauty Extra booklet was a high-value supplement inserted into JOY Indonesia magazine. Designed as a comprehensive “Makeup Class in Your Pocket,” this project aimed to provide readers with a step-by-step masterclass on beauty techniques. From foundational skin prep to intricate eye makeup, the booklet translates professional makeup artistry into accessible, everyday guides for the modern Indonesian woman.
Design Concept
The visual direction was driven by a “Clean Editorial” approach, focusing on clarity, femininity, and instructional efficiency. We utilized a bright, high-key photography style to ensure that makeup textures and colors were accurately represented. The layout uses a sophisticated mix of serif headlines for a premium feel, paired with clean sans-serif body text to maintain readability during technical tutorials.
Key Features:
- Step-by-Step Instructional Design: The booklet features a highly structured “Lesson” format (e.g., Lesson 1: Concealer, Lesson 3: Brows). We utilized macro photography and clear call-outs to guide the reader through specific application techniques.
- Complex Data Layouts: The “Shopping Guide” (Panduan Belanja) spreads manage a high volume of product information. We organized varied product shapes and brands into a cohesive grid, using color-coded categories to help readers navigate between base, eye, and lip products effortlessly.
- Face-Shape Infographics: To add practical value, we designed custom “Seni Aplikasi Perona Pipi” (Blush Application) illustrations. These serve as a quick visual reference for readers to customize their makeup based on their unique face shapes (Oval, Round, Square, Triangle).
- Integrated Brand Styling: While maintaining the JOY Indonesia identity, the booklet seamlessly incorporates premium brand products (such as Clinique, Shu Uemura, and Bobbi Brown) into the editorial flow without losing the magazine’s signature energetic and playful tone.
The Outcome The Beauty Extra booklet successfully served as an “evergreen” reference guide for JOY readers. By balancing high-end beauty aesthetics with practical, educational layouts, the project enhanced the magazine’s value proposition and provided a premium platform for beauty brand partners.
